Can you benefit from a health coach? We asked registered nutritionist-health trainer Erin Coates for more information on what a health trainer does when you might want to.
What is a health coach?
A health coach is your personal health advocate, guide: partner. They will help you make lifestyle changes to improve your physical health.
Availability is often available through corporate health plans. Your doctor may also recommend health education if you have a chronic health problem, such as diabetes. Or, you can hire a health trainer to help you achieve your health goals, such as fitness.
Health educators typically address the six major areas of health that are divided into other categories. The six main areas are:
If one of these areas is out of balance, so are the others. Someone who is not physically active can be very stressed if they do not sleep well at night or eat well. Combined, it can be overwhelming.
Health educators help people decide where to start and make small changes that grow over time, Coates said.
“A health coach helps you set goals by looking at what stage you are at and what action you are ready for,” says Coates. “It is about self-disclosure. The health coach just guides you by putting the pieces yourself. You find out how to make the changes that work for your life. ”
What does a health coach do?
A health coach will “stick” to you to help you figure out what is holding you back from achieving your health goals. Your coach will check on you regularly by email, phone or in person, usually for at least three months. During these conversations, the health coach asks questions so you can think about how you can overcome the challenges.
“The most common obstacle people face is their own thoughts about change,” Coates said. Through motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques, health educators help people work on some of their thoughts. “People are finding out what prevents them from following the changes they would like to see.”
For example, say your doctor wants you to eat more fruits and vegetables. A health coach can start by asking questions such as:
- On a scale of 1 to 10, with a maximum of 10, how important is it for you to make this change?
- What do you think is reasonable?
- What is blocking you or what challenges might you face as a result?
- How is your home life?
- What plan can we make so that you can continue to get more fruits and vegetables?
“Health education is not about having someone tell you what to do,” Coates said. “It’s someone who respects your conditions, your reasons why you want – or do not want – to change. The health coach will come to you with what kind of egg you need. ”
The benefits of health education
Change is often difficult, even when it is what we really want. Sometimes it even seems impossible. The benefit of health education is that someone in your corner can help you through it, և research shows that it works.
One study found that people who spent three months in health training improved significantly.
- Blood pressure.
- Glucose (blood sugar).
- Triglycerides (blood fat).
- Body weight.
- Cardiovascular fitness.
A health coach can help when you feel that nothing you have done has worked. Or encourage yourself if you feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or seem to not have enough time.
“Often a person can skip a doctor’s appointment and become frustrated. “God, I have to lose all this weight,” or “Now I have all these things to do,” Coates says. “A health coach can help people see that they have strengths that they can use to make a difference. We help them see opportunities based on their unique situation and capabilities to make sustainable change easier and easier. ”
The health coach also provides:
- Responsibility: Knowing that you need to check with another person about your progress can motivate you to move forward.
- Encouragement. Health coaches act as cheerleaders to pick you up when you are not having a good day.
- Unconditional support. The health coach will not judge your actions. They help you come to your own conclusions about what works and what doesn’t to achieve your goals.
